Overview

Monica Delgado creates immersive, multi-dimensional explorations of paint’s physicality, often tricking the viewer into perceiving the medium as fabric, canvas, paper, or plastic. Her distinctive process involves layering acrylic paint, allowing it to dry in various forms such as drips, strips, or sheets. She crafts intricate lines with the paint, drips it from sticks or knives, and spreads it with putty tools and scrapers. Once dry, she manipulates the paint further, stacking, coiling, rolling, draping, or wrapping it around objects. Occasionally, she cuts the paint into small pieces and adheres them together.

Once a traditional painter with references to photography, Delgado moved away from conventional techniques. She became captivated by the cultural conversation around the "death of painting" and developed a desire to break free from the constraints and repetitive nature of working on canvas. This led her to push the boundaries of what painting could be, questioning the ways in which the medium could be used.

Delgado's work aims to evoke both delight and wonder, while also prompting a series of questions about the relationship between paint as both a medium and a subject. She challenges viewers to reconsider its connection to traditional supports—or the lack thereof—and contributes to the ongoing dialogue of revitalizing painting without predictability.

Born in Manila, Philippines in 1979, Monica Delgado brings a sculptural approach to working with acrylic paint. She earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Fine Arts in Painting from the University of the Philippines, Diliman, graduating Cum Laude in 2003. Delgado has showcased her work in solo and group exhibitions across cities such as Manila, Singapore, Istanbul, New York, New Jersey, San Francisco, and Houston. She has also completed two residencies at the School of Visual Arts in New York City. Monica currently lives and works in New York City.
